Services for retired shipping magnate Maitland Smith, 72, will be at 11am
today in the Philbrick Coral Gables Chapel. Mr Smith, who died
Wednesday, was active in Coral Gables cultural life.
He came to Coral Gables in 1945 from New York City, where he had been
vice president of the C.D Mallory Co., later known as the Marine
Transport Co. He was veteran of World War 1 and a member of the Coral
Gables County Club. He was an avid patron of the Coconut Grove
Playhouse and similar endeavours. He resided at 6598 Caballero Blvd. He
is survived by two sisters, Miss Elizabeth Smith of Coral Gables and
Miss Alice Smith of Nova Scotia, and a brother, Walter Smith, of New York
City.

Alfred Maitland Smith served his apprenticeship as a clerk and also went
to America, where he made headway and prospered. When America joined in
the Great War, he served in the American Army and rose to be an officer.
He never crossed the seas, but remained at the training camp, holding the
position of an officer till the end of the war. On return to civil life
he obtained an important position in a shipping company in America. A
dutiful son, he has always remembered and assisted his mother in his
prosperity. He lately paid a visit to the old land and to his home and
kin in Aberdeen. From there he went to London, crossed to France, and
visited Italy before returning to his professional duties in
America.
