1) "Lockerby Burgh Court - The monthly Police Court was held on Monday -
Provost Henderson and Bailie Douglas presiding. GEORGE COUPLAND, 20
Princes Street, Lochmaben, a member of the Lochmaben Town Council; and
Matthew Burnett, baker, residing in Bridge Street, Locherbie, were
charged with having committed a breach of the peace on Sunday evening,
2nd sept., opposite the Clydesdale Bank, Lockerbie. COUPLAND pleaded not
guilty, and Burnett guilty under provocation. It appeared that Coupland
had that night lodged a complaint with the police against Burnett for
assault. Evidence having been led, the charge against COUPLAND was found
proven, and they were fined 5s, or three day's imprisonment. " Newspaper

3. " 'THE LOCKMABEN THEFT' At Dumfries on Wednesday afternoon,
John Beattie, a labourer, belonging to Brydekirk, pled guilty to a charge
of stealing thirty shillings from a young man named Duff, who had been
employed along with him at the Lochmaben water works and was a
fellow-lodger at the house of GEORGE COUPLAND, baker, 20 Princes Street,
Lochmaben. There were three previous convictions against him - the first
in Annan Burgh Court in 1883, of falsehood, fraud and wilful imposition,
and two in the Sheriff Court for theft. On this last occasion he was
found guilty of stealing the sum of ú60, and he received a sentence of
ten months imprisonment. Mr Phyn, P.F, characterised this as a very mean
theft. The prisoner, who had left work on Saturday, saw the money in his
companion's purse on the Sunday, and visited their bedroom several times
on Monday, Duff's coat had been left hanging in the rrom with the puse in
it. From what passed with Beattie about paying for his lodgings, the
landlady suspected that someting was wromg, and she discovered that
Duff's purse was empty. It was found that the accused had spent all his
wages on Saturday night and had been very lavish with money on Monday,
changing half-sovereigns, of which the missing money consisted. Mr James
Hyslop, solicitor, made a statement of behalf of the accused, to the
effect that he had himself been drinking, and then finding himself out of
employment, wished to make his was to Carlisle. Sentence of sixty days
imprisonment was passed." Newspaper 17 Nov 1894
